Aligning with Saudi 2030 Healthcare Vision through a Patient Support Program

January 2025

Situation

In the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA), patients requiring specialized medication often need support to get timely treatment. The Saudi Vision 2030 presents an ambitious roadmap for healthcare with an emphasis on improving the quality of life for all citizens by ensuring access to world-class medical services, fostering innovation, and enhancing the sustainability of healthcare systems. Central to this vision is addressing the unique needs of underserved populations, including patients with rare diseases, through advanced medical care and holistic support services. Approximately 23 percent of KSA’s rural population faces considerable difficulties in accessing essential healthcare services due to greater distances and limited transportation options. Patient Support Programs (PSPs) align seamlessly with Saudi Vision 2030’s healthcare goals by offering solutions that improve access, equity, and outcomes for patients. These programs empower individuals to overcome logistical, financial, and treatment adherence barriers, ensuring that every patient—regardless of location—receives consistent, high-quality care. By integrating home-based services, such as IV infusion therapies and medication delivery, PSPs reduce the burden on traditional healthcare facilities, thereby enhancing the efficiency of the healthcare system. Moreover, PSPs offer personalized care and foster collaboration between the public and private sectors, ensuring that healthcare advancements are inclusive and accessible to all, including those with complex and rare conditions.

Solution

With a growing need for innovative healthcare solutions, a renowned hospital and research center in KSA has aligned its initiatives with Saudi Vision 2030, which aims to enhance healthcare delivery and empower citizens. The hospital partnered with Axios International to develop and implement a PSP in 2023 that focused on delivering medications and administering them at patients’ homes, thereby eliminating logistical barriers and ensuring convenience.

The joint initiative aims to improve patients’ experiences and health outcomes by ensuring compliance with treatment, continuity of care, and patient satisfaction. By offering convenient home delivery and safe administration services, the PSP reduces the need for frequent hospital visits, alleviating patient burdens. It also minimizes exposure to hospital-acquired infections and decreases disruptions to daily life, thereby contributing to enhanced overall well-being and satisfaction for patients and their caregivers.

For the private industry, the initiative provides a scalable and cost-effective healthcare delivery model aligned with value-based care principles. By improving adherence, the program minimizes medication wastage and reduces overall costs. Furthermore, the initiative strengthens the private sector’s reputation as a key partner in innovative patient support and corporate social responsibility, enhancing market positioning and driving collaboration opportunities.

Hospitals also benefit significantly from the program through enhanced operational efficiency and resource optimization. By reducing hospital visits and readmissions, the initiative lowers healthcare system costs while delivering patient-centered care. The PSP further strengthens hospitals’ partnerships with private industry, paving the way for future sustainable healthcare delivery solutions and showcasing their commitment to advancing innovative care models.

Results

Since its launch in February 2023, the PSP has made a remarkable impact by supporting 1,550 patients till the end of year 2024, with further growth anticipated. The PSP has facilitated the administration of 49 different medications through approximately 4,500 home-delivered shipments, ensuring patients receive their treatments seamlessly. Additionally, it has provided vital counseling and follow-ups, empowering patients with the knowledge and tools needed to manage their medication effectively while enhancing their overall treatment adherence and experience.

It has also delivered significant benefits to the healthcare system by reducing hospital visits, alleviating operational pressures, and minimizing the risk of hospital-acquired infections. By promoting preventive care, it has decreased readmissions and emergency care needs, contributing to a safer and more efficient healthcare environment. In alignment with Saudi Vision 2030, this initiative improves access to high-quality, home-based healthcare services. It exemplifies patient-centered care, ensuring that patients’ needs remain at the forefront. The PSP fosters collaboration between public and private stakeholders, setting a benchmark for sustainable and scalable healthcare delivery models across Saudi Arabia.
