AF About Us and Our Approach

ABOUT
Axios Foundation
Strengthening health systems
and quality of care across the world

Axios was formed by a group of health experts who shared the vision of an organization that could work effectively with clients and stakeholders to improve access to healthcare in developing countries and emerging markets.

In 1997, following the pioneering efforts of its founders in launching one of the first antiretroviral (ARV) access programs as part of the UNAIDS Drug Access Initiative – which proved that ARTs could be delivered safely and effectively in low-income settings and paved the way for subsequent price reductions – Axios International was created, followed by the Axios Foundation in 2000.

The Axios Foundation is dedicated to improving health systems and building local capacity to strengthen communities and increase access to healthcare in developing countries. The Axios Foundation is a non-profit organization incorporated in the U.S. as a 501(c)(3) public charity.

Our Approach

The Axios Foundation believes in engaging all stakeholders and providing them with the tools and capabilities to provide quality healthcare. We seek out unique solutions and creative ideas that build on existing systems and infrastructure to avoid duplication and inefficiencies.

We have successfully deployed the Axios Mobilization Methodology (AMM), a powerful tool for assessing the needs of health systems and communities and mobilizing them to take leadership in addressing these needs themselves, in a number of countries. The central principle of the AMM is that the people who are asked to assess a problem are also the people who will be responsible for implementing the solution. By encouraging local ownership and involving key stakeholders at all levels, we set the stage for sustainability from project inception.

Axios places strong emphasis on sustainability and achieve this by developing local capabilities through training, workshops, and on the job mentoring. In addition, Axios implements a robust transition planning strategy to ensure that our clients are prepared to take over operational, financial, and administrative responsibility upon program completion or graduation.

Laboratory System Strengthening

The Axios Foundation develops innovative methods to improve the quality of care and help connect people living with HIV/AIDS with services.  Our philosophy has been to work with and strengthen communities and health systems to better address the needs of people with HIV/AIDS and to improve prevention as well as ensure better care for children and others affected by HIV/AIDS.  We encourage and facilitate strong partnerships with all stakeholders to foster comprehensive and participatory decision making and planning to address all challenges.

Axios has extensive experience in HIV Counseling and Testing (HCT), Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission (PMTCT), Home Based Care (HBC) and programs for Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVC), and has pioneered a number of important innovations in these areas.  We work at the community level to formulate new ideas and solutions that address the social and cultural context of our patients and clients.

Community-Based & HIV/AIDS Services

We recognize that developing countries have limited diagnostic and treatment services for cancer. To address this, we are pioneering new approaches and partnering with leading pharmaceutical companies to improve access to cancer drugs and treatment in developing countries.

A key element of the Axios Foundation’s mission is to develop local capabilities to encourage sustainability and independence.  We believe that we can strengthen communities and increase access to healthcare by focusing on building capacity.  In all of our programs, we seek to design and conduct regular and systematic training programs, and develop sustainable systems based on international best practices.

Encouraging Local Ownership

Axios has designed and utilized the Axios Mobilization Methodology as a tool to engage stakeholders and encourage local ownership to set the stage for sustainability from inception.  Capacity building in the application of the methodology is carried out through a hands-on exercise in the field. This enables representatives of the national ministries to become trainers themselves when projects are scaled up to cover additional regions.

Training and Knowledge Sharing

The Axios Foundation deploys international and local experts who offer unmatched knowledge, experience and have worked on similar assignments. We ensure that experiences and lessons from similar programs in other countries are brought to bear on the current programs being implemented.  This expertise is augmented with ongoing training in project management, communications, negotiations, conflict-resolution, analytical tools/techniques and other relevant topics of interest.

Transition Planning

To prepare for the handover of a program at its end, we develop robust transition planning strategy.  We conduct workshops where we provide tools and guidance for our partners to assist them in assuming full responsibility for program activities.  We also hold practical exercises on topics such as priority setting, administration, and financial management to allow our partners to plan and forecast for the resources and funds needed to continue priority activities.

Capacity Building

We are committed to partnerships with the private sector and are pleased to be partnering with a number of major pharmaceutical companies to increase drug access through efficient and effective donations of drugs and other medical products in developing countries.

The complex health challenges that developing countries face require the cooperation of governments, non-profits, NGOs, and the private sector.  The Axios Foundation is committed to partnerships with the private sector, and has joined with a number of major pharmaceutical companies to enable efficient and effective donations of drugs and other medical products to patients in need in low- and middle-income countries.
