Axios was formed by a group of health experts who shared the vision of an organization that could work effectively with patients, and private and public sector stakeholders to improve access to healthcare in developing countries and emerging markets.

In 1997, following the pioneering efforts of its founders in launching one of the first antiretroviral (ARV) access programs as part of the UNAIDS Drug Access Initiative – which proved that ARTs could be delivered safely and effectively in low-income settings and paved the way for subsequent price reductions – Axios International was created, followed by the Axios Foundation in 2000. Today, Axios continues to break new ground in the design and implementation of market access solutions across Africa, Asia, Latin America, Middle East and Europe.

Growing demand combined with ever increasing costs for healthcare are requiring a radical re-think of top-down models of state-provided healthcare to ensure sustainability.  As demand on government budgets increase, the responsibility for treatment and other medical costs is increasingly falling on the patient.

As a result, patients are taking a more active role in treatment decisions – particularly decisions to pursue, pay for and stay on treatment.

Axios’ experience has taught us that these patient decisions are guided by a complex set of considerations (see graphic). Unlike the typically displayed treatment journey, these decisions are not sequential. Instead, they are often made in parallel and are guided by the availability and accessibility of treatment at the core.

For that reason, effective market access strategies must be designed not only around payers and prescribers, but around how patients make treatment decisions – it is what we call Patient Access 360. The Patient Access 360 framework captures patient reality to aid in the design and implementation of practical solutions that solve real-world problems and resonate with patients and stakeholders alike.

The framework is used across all Axios’ strategies and programs to ensure that solutions are both medically beneficial and commercially sustainable.
